Our Story

It has been nearly 50 years since Chester Smith hung his first curtain under the company name, Chernway. At the time Chester was working as a fabric representative for Sekkers Australia. He had been given the order for curtains for the Koala hotel in Oxford Square, when the general manager inquired if Chester could recommend a fitting company. Without hesitation or a complete plan he said he’d do it.

Chernway started from humble beginnings, in the garage of his mum and dads house in Neutral Bay. He recalls building the tracks in the living room with his mum and dad. Television had just come out and they would all work together and watch the television. From the garage in the suburbs to it current address, in Annandale, Chernway has continued to evolve and thrive every year. Chester’s vision was to create a soft furnishing company brand that would be synonymous with integrity, that would consider its employees family and be known for giving each client a personalised service. This would be achieved by incorporating old fashion values with technical knowledge, to exceed the clients expectations time after time.

It has been this vision that has Chernway heading towards 50 years as an Australian owned and operated Soft Furnishings Company based in Annandale, Sydney. Almost every member of the team has been with Chernway for a minimum of two decades and are part of the family. Chernway has built trusted relationships with companies, designers and the public by continuing to deliver projects that embody Chernway’s values.
